Linking to An External Page Within The HTML Content Module

Sometimes you'll want to be able to insert a link on your site that links to an external page.  By external page, I mean a page that is not part of your site (eg, www.colostate.edu or www.google.com are "pages" that are external to this site, code.colostate.edu).  Here's how to do so:

  1. First, log in with your eID to your site (this assumes you have sufficient privileges to edit your site).
  2. Once you are at the page to which you want to add a link, click the "Edit" link on your page.
  3. Now, type in the text you want to become a link (eg, "Google" or "CSU Home")
  4. Select the text you just typed and click the "Insert/Edit Link" button in your editor: Insert Link
  5. Type in the address of the page you wish to link to:
  6. External Link
  7. Click "OK" then "Update" to accept the link/update your page.

Linking to An External Page Within Your Site Menu

  1. First, log into your site as an admin
  2. Click New Page, give it a title and choose the appropriate parent (to determine where the link appears in the menu).  If the page already exists, just go to Administration --> Add/Edit Pages, find the page in the list you wish to redirect elsewhere, and then click the gear icon to edit the page's settings.
  3. Finally, for the page URL, use the fully qualified url. Ie: http://www.google.com
  4. Save your page

Linking to An Internal Page

By internal page, I mean a page that is a part of your site (eg, http://code.colostate.edu/mojo-training.aspx or http://code.colostate.edu/home.aspx are "pages" that are internal to this site, code.colostate.edu).  Anyways, here's how to add an internal link:

  1. First, log in with your eID to your site (this assumes you have sufficient privileges to edit your site).
  2. Once you are at the page to which you want to add a link, click the "Edit" link on your page to bring up the page editor.
  3. Now, type in the text you want to become a link (eg, "Mojo Training" or "Home")
  4. Select the text you just typed and click the "Insert/Edit Link" button in your editor Insert Link
  5. Next click "Browse Server":
    browse server
  6. In the left sidebar you should see a folder called "Pages".  Select that folder to see the public pages in your site.
  7. Select the page you want to link to from the left, then click the "Select" button on the right to select that page
  8. Click "OK" then "Update" to accept the link/update your page.

Opening a Link in a New Window

If the link you want to open in a new tab/window is an existing page on your site, follow these steps:

  1. First, sign into your site by clicking "Sign In" (often this link appears at the bottom of your site)
  2. Navigate to the page you wish to edit (actually go to that page in your site).
  3. Click the "Page Settings" icon (usually this icon can be found near the top of your site) - Page Settings
  4. Check the box for Open In New Window

If the link is instead within your body content (ie, accessible via your WYSIWYG editor), then you would instead do the following:

  1. First, sign into your site by clicking "Sign In" (often this link appears at the bottom of your site)
  2. Navigate to the page you wish to edit (actually go to that page in your site).
  3. Click "Edit" next to the content you wish to edit
  4. Note the name/url of your link
  5. Within your HTML editor, click "Source" to see the code view for the content
  6. Find your the location of your link in code.  It will look something like this: <a href="yourlink">Name Of Your Link</a>.
  7. Once found, insert the following code within your tag: target="_blank".  So, your new tag should be structured like this: <a href="yourlink" target="_blank">Your Link</a>
  8. Click Source again to go back to your default design view
  9. Click Update to save your changes.  Be sure to test that the link now opens in a new window
